Wicked! We’re off to see the Wonderful Witches of Oz!
What’s Wicked about?
With the most spectacular staging you’ll ever witness in a theatre, Wicked will enchant, beguile and bewitch theatregoers of all ages; you won’t believe your eyes - which is why experiencing the spellbinding magic of Wicked just once is never enough.
“One of the most successful musicals of all time” (BBC News), Wicked is already the 12th longest running production in West End history. This musical phenomenon is the winner of over 100 major international awards, including three Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, eleven WhatsOnStage Awards, and a Grammy.
The show whisks us away to the breathtakingly beautiful (and completely re-imagined) land of Oz, where an unlikely friendship is blossoming between two Shiz University students, Glinda and Elphaba – one popular, pretty and into pink in a BIG way; the other magical, gifted and green. But it soon becomes clear that being the colour of a cabbage is the least of Elphaba’s problems - something bad is happening in Oz.
Wicked weaves an ingenious backstory – and a new destiny – for the most cherished characters from L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, as friendship is tested to the limit and powerful forces conspire to create sworn enemies of Glinda The Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Will good conquer evil, or might we discover that wickedness is not always what it seems?
‘Packed with wit, storming songs and beautiful costumes’ (The Guardian), Wicked has already clocked up over 6000 performances at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. This unforgettable musical fantasy features showstopping music & lyrics by Grammy® and Academy® Award-winner Stephen Schwartz (The Prince of Egypt, Disney’s Pocahontas, Godspell) and stunning costumes by Tony® Award winner Susan Hilferty. Musical staging is by Tony® Award-winner Wayne Cilento with direction by double Tony® Award-winner Joe Mantello.
Wicked songs
Yes, the songs really are Wicked! There’s the hysterically funny Popular, the spectacular The Wizard and I and the show’s mega-hit, Defying Gravity, which literally brings the house down at every performance! Other songs include: Dancing Through Life, I’m Not That Girl, As Long as You’re Mine and the enchanting duet For Good.
Wicked Awards
Wicked has scooped over 100 major awards, including three Tony® Awards, two Olivier Awards and ten WhatsOnStage Awards (voted for by theatregoers) including the triple crown of three ‘Best West End Show’ statuettes.
Wickedly Weird Trivia
During the song Defying Gravity, composer Stephen Schwartz nods to the film The Wizard of Oz by using the 7 opening notes from “Somewhere over the Rainbow” (see if you can spot them in the lyric “unlimited/together we’re unlimited” from Defying Gravity). Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba for the show’s launch on both Broadway and London productions of Wicked also provided the vocals for Elsa in Disney’s Frozen.

Amazing show
22 March 2022
The film world continues its love affair with werewolves, vampires and all things 'Twilight'. But theatre types have always known witches are where it's at. After its 2006 opening at Apollo Victoria, Oz prequel 'Wicked' continues to fill this massive theatre with an international crowd of voracious consumers (glass of champagne and a choccy for £16 anyone?). But this stylish and bombastic musical still delivers, sailing over its patchy score thanks to a gravity-defying performance from its current leading lady Rachel Tucker, as the intense green-skinned undergrad who goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West. 'Wicked' is a spectacle that rises or falls around its central performance. In the midst of a gigantic production full of bangs, bells and whistles Tucker, with her small frame and searing vocal ability, simply flies off with the show. She's closely followed by Gina Beck, who plays good girl, Glinda. Glinda and Elphaba's relationship forms the heart of this story and, as the Good Witch, Beck is a consummate clown, playing up the silliness of her character at every turn. But she can raise a tear, too, and her final duet with Tucker, 'For Good', is genuinely heart-rending. The Tim Burton-inspired ensemble oscillate between the hypnotic and grotesque and a sweet but thin voiced Matt Willis charms as the rather superfluous Prince. As in classical ballet, this is all about the women and, even by previous lead Idina Menzel's standards, they are in soaring form here.
